MidTerm Assginment

This is an open note/material/resource assignment. You may discuss all you want about the Units through Piazza, but this assignment is to be your own original work.

In this section, you must create FOUR quality multiple choice questions over the basic facts of units 1 and 2. Create questions over key pieces of historical fact that are the most important for the overall understanding of unit materials. Questions can be over concepts, ideas, people, places, events, etc. The question should be meaningful and not a “gotcha” question. Your correct and incorrect answers should be clearly identified (you should have a minimum of 4 answers per question) and a test taker should have to stop and consider the answers carefully.

Once you have crafted your four question and provided four answers to choose from (identify your correct answer), you must then explain the question. Why did you think this question was important enough to be on your imaginary exam? Why is the correct answer correct and the incorrect answers wrong? Why did you choose the answers that you did? Do this for each of the four questions.

II. KEY IDS – 30 points total

In this section, you must create THREE IDs for a test. IDs are key people, places, events, or concepts (so “George Washington” or “trickle-down economics” for example).

For each ID you will provide a sample answer (explaining the who/what, where, when, and why it is important). After providing your ID and sample answer, you will then need to explain why you chose this ID for the list, what makes it so key that it should appear on your imaginary test? Do this for each of the three required IDs. (so two parts – sample answer and then explanation – for each of the three IDs)

III. CONNECTIONS – 40 points

A connection is just that, an explanation of how two or more historical facts fit together.

Here is a non-history example that will give you an idea of what is expected:

Fact 1: Men’s College football teams at the NCAA I FBS level can award a maximum of 85 scholarships to players

Fact 2: The US Women’s National Team has just won the World Cup for the 4th time and has played in 5 of the 8 Women’s World Cup finals and US National Women’s Teams dominate Olympic competitions (Soccer, Softball, Ice Hockey, Volleyball, Rowing, Water Polo).

Connection:  Title IX (of the Educational Amendments of 1972) legislation requires gender equity in both the classroom and school related activities at both the K-12 and collegiate level. At the time Title IX became law, women’s sports in schools and colleges was often underfunded or non-existent while men’s college football (and high school football in states like Texas) had money thrown at them. The law requires that men and women have proportional access to athletic scholarships at the collegiate level. Since most NCAA I level universities field large men’s football teams, they needed to field teams in women’s sports to remain in proportional compliance (you have to offset those 85 male players somehow). Therefore, high schools and colleges began fielding teams in quite a few different sports to be in compliance with Title IX and more American women began playing team sports. Today, the national averages are 1 in every 2.5 women play a sport in high school. The best of these female athletes now go on to play college sports, and national teams are pulled from the best of college athletes. Women have come to dominate Olympic Team Sports because American women have gender equity in team sports in high schools and colleges thanks to Title IX; few other countries have gender equity in sporting opportunities, particularly at the team level, for girls through schools and fewer girls play team sports in other parts of the world.

For this part of the Untest, I want you to make 4 connections from the time periods covered in Units 1 and 2. The facts should be different facts (not two sides of an issue, battle, debate, etc.) that may not seemingly be connected, but are. List the two historical facts and then explain the connection.

IV. Geographic Connections – 20 points

A geographic connection is similar to the connections above, except that one of the facts is related to geography, climate, or environment. (Remember the discussion of how geography and history are related). You need to make 2 geographic connections

V. Overall Takeaway – 40 points

This is an “unessay.” Instead of giving you a prompt and having you write a full-length essay, I want you to sit back and think about Units 1 and 2 as a whole. What are your key takeaways (these are the most important overall themes of the units)? How would you explain these most important “big picture” concepts of American history? How would you explain this in a paragraph (think of this as a two-minute elevator speech on US History to someone who knows nothing about the subject).

Note that your paragraph (which should be no longer than one page) should follow rule of three formatting and contain a thesis statement and supporting evidence.

The following links can help you determine which sources are credible or non-credible during your research: Credible vs non-credible sources, Getting Started With Research, Why I Shouldn’t Use Wikipedia and Identifying your Resources.

Remember that this is a formal essay and you need an introduction with a thesis statement, body, and conclusion. Because students must respond, please submit your essay as soon as possible.

Civilization History

Response 1

1. During the Vedic Age of Indian civilization, it is believed that after the collapse of the Indus Valley civilization some of the kinship groups and patriarchal families migrated into India. As some within the Aryas tribe (light-skinned) entered into the Ganges Valley, they encountered a struggle with the Dasas tribe (dark-skinned) but managed to force the tribe into southern India. The struggle between the tribes led to the development of the Varna class system. Under this system, people were born into one of the four Varna’s: Brahmin was the class of priests and scholars; Kshatriya was warriors; Vaishya was merchants; and Shundra was peasants and laborers. The fifth group was the Untouchables; they were outside the system because of the nature of their work. The work was considered polluted as it dealt with dead things and cremations.

Now, the Varna was divided into groups and subdivided into jati’s: order of hierarchy. Under the hierarchy, were complex rules that governed the different occupations, duties, and rituals of each Jati as a well as regulations concerning interaction between people of different Jati. The system served to assign occupations to the Varna and Jati in which each individual belongs; and the system separated the members of the different Varna and Jati into a system of purity and impurity. Purity restrictions occurred in the areas of marriage, drink, food and touch.

The system of Varna and Jati  lasted because many of the practices and attitudes were indoctrinated into the Hindu people, rules for social behavior, and the philosophy of reincarnation. The belief was every individual has an immortal spirit that will be reborn in another body after death and that body will be determined by karma in this and the previous life. The people believed that rebellion against caste expectations would result in a lower rebirth in the next life.

The United States is a nation of diverse cultures. People are classified as rich, middle class, or poor. The rich are considered well educated and highly paid professionals; the middle class are semi-professional and educated working middle class; and the poor are the working under class with very little to no education. Income is the most prominent indicator of class status, and education to occupation and income.

2.Yes, both routes originated for the purpose of trading. Both routes have harsh desert conditions. Silk road passes through the Tarim Basin. Trans-Saharan passes the Saharan desert. Both had famous outpost. Silk road had the Samarkand outpost and Trans-Saharan had the Timbuktu post.

Response 2

During the Vedic Age of Indian civilization, it is believed that after the collapse of the Indus Valley civilization some of the kinship groups and patriarchal families migrated into India. As some within the Aryas tribe (light-skinned) entered into the Ganges Valley, they encountered a struggle with the Dasas tribe (dark-skinned) but managed to force the tribe into southern India. The struggle between the tribes led to the development of the Varna class system. The system seems to have kept much of the Indian population under subjection because some members was unwilling to challenge their positions. The internal divisions and complexes hierarchy of the Indian society served an important social function. The system provided each individual with a clear identity and role and offered the benefits of group solidarity and support. Certain interactions and behaviors were appropriate only between those of equal status. The system assured that the religious, political, and financial powers were all separated into four different social classes (Bulliet, et. 2011). As both of the Sanskrit word varna and jati are usually translated as “caste”, it has always misleading because they have an important differences behind them.

Professor’s comment:

We have five possible topics to tackle this week, which begins Monday, Sept. 16. Many people do not realize that we fought a war against Mexico over land issues (Keene, 2013). And then there was the notion of Manifest Destiny, wherein God’s will was accomplished by our securing the rest of the land to the Pacific Ocean (Keene, 2013; Roark, 2009, pp. 350, 363). It is a fascinating term to explore.

What were the different meanings of this? And if you lived at the time, would you have gone West toward this land of opportunity?

Select two of these five events and interact with the text and lesson, and any other authoritative sources you may find. Thanks!

Competing Viewpoints Paper Guidelines

As historians, we are constantly engaged in an ongoing intellectual conversation stretching back generations. The purpose of this assignment is for you to enter this conversation by reading, analyzing, and critiquing the arguments presented by historians with differing positions on an important topic or theme. Each chapter in Major Problems in the Early Repubilc contains such essays, and each student is to select one SET of essays listed in the syllabus and write a short paper summarizing, analyzing, and evaluating their arguments. For some tips on reading historical scholarship and writing analytical reviews, see the relevant handouts posted in the Writing Resources folder on our class Blackboard site.

Task: In a well-organized, thesis-driven paper of 4-6 pages, students will:

  • briefly summarize the central argument of each piece
  • discuss the methods or sources used by the authors
  • explain how the pieces relate to each other and to other shared readings from the course
  • evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of each piece
  • Do you agree or disagree strongly with one author? Why?

  • All papers should have an introduction and conclusion that clearly state the paper’s central ARGUMENT – in other words, you should explain here what YOU are saying about the essays, their arguments, and their significance. Summarizing their arguments or the topics they cover is not sufficient. YOU need make a claim about the scholarship, and support that claim with evidence from the texts.
  • Papers should have a single-spaced heading that includes the student’s name, course number, and date, followed by the paper title. A separate title page is not necessary. All pages should be numbered.
  • Standard formatting rules apply – 12 pt. font, Times New Roman or other standard font, 1” margins, double-spaced.
  • All sources MUST be cited with Chicago Style footnotes (see Chicago Style Citation handout on Blackboard)
