Nurses must commit to lifelong learning throughout their careers because the fact is the healthcare world is always evolving every day. If we look back and saw how the nursing field was 20 years, you can say that that we changed so much when it came to efficient patient care, medical equipment, and health service. It is important that only current working nurses, but nursing students as well should be keeping up to date with new developed information provided by research teams, clinical trials, medical journals, skill technique demonstrations, etc. Educational opportunities don’t end just because one finishes school, which is the reason why facilities require mandatory courses during their career to ensure that the nurses are not behind on what are new ways to provide the upmost care for the patients. To achieve this, nurses can engage in different approaches of acquiring knowledge through continuing professional development (CPD), through formal learning, courses, or workshops as well as workplace informal learning, through self-reflection, appraising literature for best evidence through journal clubs and giving feedback to each other (Mandlenkosi Mlambo, 2021). When the Sigma Theta Tau organizations first started, their goal was to help students’ nurses on how to advance their knowledge on every topic possible whether it would leadership skills, therapeutic communication, or how to make critical decisions. Also, in the back of the mind, we all know that everyone makes mistakes, but it how we learn from it and fix the situations is what matter most. This organization have spent years with that mission in mind because we don’t know how the nursing field or healthcare system may change in the next 3 years if the pandemic ends, or the next 5 or even the next 10 years. High technology is already on the rise today with state of the art equipment used for diagnostics or surgical procedures and new medical discoveries put into practice the improving health quality.

Healthcare is a field that requires constant learning because as technology advances so does healthcare. There are many things that can contribute to the advancements of healthcare such as new research or new medications that are developed. Because of this it is important to commit to lifelong learning. Nurses have to be aware that the patients are part of these changes as well, they need to be informed of all the benefits a new procedure or treatment could have for them and nurses should be there to educate them. It is also important for nurses to be aware of organizational changes in regard to changes and learning the new policies and protocols that are implemented. There are so many changes when it comes to hospital acquired infections and different evidence based practices that can help reduce them, again in this instance a nurse has to be aware and learn these new protocols (Nursing & Medicine, 2019). Finally the nurses themselves are on the path of always learning, since there are many certifications and continuing education credits to make a nurse a better and well rounded health care professionals.
Sigma Theta Tau International assist nurses in their lifelong learning journey by creating modules and allowing nurses and nursing students to learn techniques and practices not only medically but legally. It also facilitates leadership skills that nurses can learn to use in the case they are nurse managers or leaders.
