The schedule is an essential element in any DNP project since it determines the resources that will be spent on the project. However, spending more time than what the schedule allocated for the project means there will be a need for extra resources to spend on the extra period.
Third, there is the aspect of the budget. A successful DNP project will not exceed the budget allocated for its completion during the planning phase. Roush and Tesoro (2018) assert that delivering any project successfully without surpassing the set budget is one of the biggest accomplishments for any organization. Therefore, adhering to a budget when doing the DNP project gives one the relevant experience necessary to replicate the same when dealing with real-life projects in the external environment away from the educational setting. Several factors will be considered in this regard including variable costs, fixed costs, indirect/direct costs, resources, and manpower, in addition to any other thing that may affect the overall expenses accrued in the implementation of the project.
Fourth, there is quality. According to Dols, Hernández, and Miles (2017), “sometimes, meeting the objectives is not sufficient enough in gaining a secure spot in the market” (p. 84). This implies that it is important to try and exceed the expectations set during the planning phase of the DNP project. This can be achieved by delivering high-quality results for the DNP project. However, it is vital to acknowledge the relatively ambiguous nature of quality compared to the other success criteria mentioned above. Nevertheless, exceeding the deliverables set during the planning phase will be a good indicator of the level of quality achieved in the DNP project. Also, comparing the results of the DNP project compared to similar projects from other parties will reveal the quality of work done and portray a good measure of success.
Finally, there is the element of stakeholder satisfaction. The DNP project has several stakeholders who are invested in its outcome. Each stakeholder has certain expectations on how the DNP project should end up. Thus, a good way of measuring the success of the DNP project is to appraise each stakeholder and find out how each of them rates the outcome of the project. The higher the ratings given by each stakeholder, the higher the satisfaction level they have in the project. In turn, this is a good measure of the success of the project. Poor ratings imply that the expectations of the stakeholders were not met, which in turn points to a poorly completed DNP project. In conclusion, these five factors are crucial in determining if the DNP project is successful or not. A regular appraisal of each element is vital during the planning and implementation phase to ensure the DNP project is on track to being successful in the end.
