The Nature and Significance of Gobekli Tepe
For this paper you’ll choose one of two topics and write a paper using at least two articles. The articles for each topic are in one of the folders below. There also is an overall instructions document in this folder, which you must read.
You must use this article in your paper, as well as the main text and comments from the Current Anthropology article that’s above.(Dietrich_et_al_2012.
The basic plan is that you’ll have to write a paper 5 or more pages long (the exact requirement is 1400 words, not counting bibliography and quotes) that analyzes and critiques the differing positions taken in the required articles for one of the topics. For each topic there are two required articles. In each case one of the articles is from the journal Current Anthropology, and includes within it a set of comments on the article written by other scholars. In your paper, you’ll have to use the main body of that article, at least one of the comments, and the second article (the one that doesn’t have comments). For one of the topics you will also need to make use of a film, and for the other topic you’ll have to use a second comment.
Be sure to read the instructions documents (both the overall instructions document and the page that’s specific to your topic), and don’t forget my citation and plagiarism rules!
UPDATE: Everything you need is now available to you — The articles for both paper topics, the detailed overall instructions document, and the topic-specific instructions are all here!
This topic deals with Göbekli Tepe, a very early Neolithic site with monumental standing stones. If you choose this topic, the question you will address in your paper is: How were the structures at this site used, and what can they teach us?
To complete this assignment, you will need to read and use two articles: Banning 2011 and Dietrich et al 2012. Both are available below. I’ve also put up an link to another reading (Mann 2011), a National Geographic article that can serve to introduce you to the site and the reasons why it is important. Mann 2011 is optional for the paper, but it’s required reading for the final (for everybody!).
To learn more about what you need to do, read the topic-specific instructions document that’s immediately below.
In addition to the overall assignment instructions and the citation and plagiarism guidelines (both of which are on the main page for this “Controversies in Archaeology” assignment), you will also need to read these instructions that are specifically about the Göbekli Tepe topic. In this article from the journal Current Anthropology, the main text of the article is followed by a series of shorter “comments” written by other scholars. After the comments, there’s then a “reply” written by the authors of the main article. In your paper, you will need to cite the main body of this article and cite two of the comments written by other scholars. Moreinformation on this is in the “topic-specific instructions” document for the assignment (above).(Banning_2011.pdf)
